Miestai ir kalbos (Cities and Languages)

Vilnius: Vilniaus universiteto leidykla, 2010

This detailed study provides new insights into the relationships between the main languages that are currently used in Lithuania. Its contributors are demonstrably well acquainted with the country‘s sociolinguistics situation and have embedded this in a wider European perspective. In the individual chapters they present a good overview of the current use of languages in the main cities of Lithuania, Vilnius, Kaunas and Klaipėda. The study also contains a detailed analysis of different language attitudes amongst Polish and Russian communities, which will provide ground for further considerations that will be of vertical value across the Baltic. Overall, this collection is carefully thought out, well organised and clearly presented. It will be important reading for anyone interested in the current language constellation in Lithuania.
